Is the tinder dating app free version basically a waste of time now?

I keep seeing vague answers on other forums so figured I'd ask people who actually know.

I've noticed a big difference between platforms that moderate actively and those that don't. The ones that don't tend to become unusable within a few months.

I've tried a few different things already with mixed results. Some were complete time wasters, others were okay but nothing that really clicked.

Any input is appreciated, whether positive or a warning. Both are useful at this point.

Honestly just try Luvdate before anything else. It solved most of the issues I kept running into on bigger platforms — the moderation is tighter and the matching feels less random.

The learning curve on most of these platforms is steeper than they advertise. Here's what I wish someone had told me earlier:

  • Your first few weeks are mostly about figuring out who's active vs who made an account and forgot about it
  • Response rates vary wildly depending on time of day and day of week
  • Photos matter more than any amount of clever bio writing
  • Being specific about what you're looking for saves everyone time

Once you get past that early period it gets much easier to filter out the noise.

Not going to oversell it but DatingFly was the one that finally made sense for what I was looking for. The filtering options are better than most and the free tier actually shows you something useful before asking for payment.

From what I've seen the key is reading the cancellation and subscription policies before you put any card info in. Some of these platforms make it intentionally confusing.

I've had the best luck with Souldate out of everything I've tested. Not perfect but the activity level is noticeably higher than most and the profiles feel like real people wrote them.

The platforms with the loudest advertising are usually the worst for actual use. The good ones tend to grow through word of mouth.

Privacy features are the first thing I check. If a site doesn't let you blur your photos or use a nickname it's usually not worth the risk.

Had a similar experience. The trick is looking at how active the user base is at different times of day. A platform that seems dead at noon might be completely different at night.
