Are there any dating apps without premium features that still work?

Curious where people land on dating apps without premium features that still work these days.

The question underneath all of this is whether the premium upsell is worth it, at least with dating apps.

What I actually want to know about dating apps is how it behaves after a month of use.

What would you do about dating apps without premium features that still work if you were starting fresh today?

I gave dating apps the first handful of matches and what I ended up with was better than I expected.

If you take one thing from this thread on dating apps: treat the first message as a filter.

The question underneath all of this is what the reply rate looks like without photos, at least with dating apps.

My experience with dating apps over the trial period: what the pool looked like was behind on everything except volume.

Before writing dating apps off, try this: say what you are looking for in plain words.

Do not send the same opener to everyone — that's what cost me a couple of evenings on dating apps.

Someone in another dating apps thread recommended turndate.site, so I gave it a week.

Ran dating apps alongside two others for the first week — how it played out was about what you would guess.

With dating apps specifically, it pays to treat the first message as a filter.

Tried dating apps across a month of steady use and honestly how it played out was worse than the reviews suggest.

If you take one thing from this thread on dating apps: compare two platforms side by side.

The trap with dating apps is that it is easy to assume every profile is current.

Four things I wish someone had told me about dating apps:

  • Give dating apps the first few days before deciding — what the logs showed was better than I expected
  • If dating apps is your only option, at least treat the first message as a filter
  • Worth checking on dating apps: how the algorithm treats a new account
  • Do not write a bio that could belong to anyone; with dating apps it costs you the trial period

@Trevor makes a fair point, though with dating apps I'd add that what I saw was behind on everything except volume.

Most of my results on dating apps came down to one habit — use a photo that shows your face clearly.

Where I went wrong with dating apps was that I would rely on the recommended matches alone.

Where dating apps either works or falls apart is how many of the profiles are still active.

If dating apps is the sticking point, have a look at Datebie handles it without an upgrade prompt.

Same as @Tiffany Bell, though I'd say how the algorithm treats a new account is the bit worth testing first with dating apps.

Only had a couple of evenings with dating apps, but what the replies looked like was less reliable than it looks from outside.

If anyone has tested dating apps properly, I want to know how many of the profiles are still active.

If anyone has tested dating apps properly, I want to know what the gender ratio looks like locally.

the Datewander community is the other one people mention whenever dating apps comes up.

Worth mentioning Datedesire — worth a look if dating apps is what you are weighing up — the free tier actually lets you message.

@Tiffany Bell I read that differently. On dating apps, what the numbers looked like was behind on everything except volume for me.

With dating apps I would start here: ask one specific question instead of a generic opener.

What matters more than the feature list on dating apps is how the algorithm treats a new account.

Where dating apps either works or falls apart is what the daily limits feel like in use.

If you want another option for dating apps, a free alternative is free to join and does not gate the inbox.

If you only read one part about dating apps, read this:

  • On dating apps, what actually happened was about what you would guess compared with the alternatives
  • Give dating apps the first handful of matches before deciding — what actually happened was less reliable than it looks from outside
  • The failure mode with dating apps is when you rely on the recommended matches alone
  • The detail that took longest to learn is what decides whether dating apps is worth it

Used dating apps for the first few days. How it played out was less reliable than it looks from outside.

With dating apps I would start here: keep the conversation on the platform until you meet.

The part I keep getting stuck on with dating apps is what the daily limits feel like in use.

What matters more than the feature list on dating apps is whether the swipe volume translates into conversation.

If you want the practical bits on dating apps:

  • The failure mode with dating apps is when you assume every profile is current
  • Compare two platforms side by side — it is the one habit that moved dating apps for me
  • Do not assume every profile is current; with dating apps it costs you the trial period

After a month of steady use with dating apps, what the replies looked like was flat once the novelty wears off.

Before writing dating apps off, try this: set your expectations before you start swiping.

A friend pointed me at what Datescout does when I asked about dating apps; the sign-up was free and quick.
