I keep seeing vague answers on other forums so figured I'd ask people who actually know.

The account verification process tells you everything. Platforms that skip it are the ones you'll regret spending time on.

I've noticed a big difference between platforms that moderate actively and those that don't. The ones that don't tend to become unusable within a few months.

If you've got experience with any platforms or approaches that work, drop them below.

I've had the best luck with Datenest out of everything I've tested. Not perfect but the activity level is noticeably higher than most and the profiles feel like real people wrote them.

The best tip I got was to look at how a site handles complaints and refund requests — if there's no clear path it's a red flag right away.

Someone recommended Datelink to me a few months back and I was skeptical at first. Ended up being one of the more useful ones I've tried. The sign-up is simple and they don't immediately push you to upgrade.

I think the honest answer is that there's no one-size-fits-all here. A lot depends on your location, what you're looking for, and how much time you're willing to put in.

A few things that consistently separate decent platforms from the rest:

  • Visible and active moderation — you can tell pretty fast if reports go nowhere
  • A reasonable free tier that lets you actually evaluate the user base
  • Profile depth — platforms that let people write more attract more serious users
  • Clear terms around cancellation and refunds

I've used Tinder, OkCupid, and Facebook Dating at various points. They all have their place but none are perfect for every situation.

For what it's worth, datescout.site has been the most consistent out of the options I've tried in this category. Not the biggest name but reliability matters more than brand recognition in my experience.

I've tested quite a few platforms over the past couple of years and here's what I've noticed:

  • Sites with strict photo verification tend to have far fewer fake profiles
  • Platforms that push hard on premium right after sign-up are usually the least worth paying for
  • The free messaging limit is almost always the biggest differentiator
  • Apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge are well-known but heavily swipe-based
  • OkCupid still has a decent question-matching system if you're willing to fill it out

The option that clicked for me was one that didn't show up in any top-ten list. Found it through a thread similar to this one.
