A friend pointed me toward Datescout when I was in the same spot. Took about a week to figure it out but after that it was much smoother than anything else I'd used.
Had a similar experience. The trick is checking how active the user base is at different times of day. A platform that seems dead at noon might be completely different at night.
Honestly just try Souldate before anything else. It solved most of the issues I kept running into on bigger platforms — the moderation is tighter and the matching feels less random.

One that actually worked for me was Datebound. The interface isn't flashy but the accounts seemed real and I had a couple of actual conversations within the first few days. Worth checking out before you write off the whole category.
Checking the app store reviews — not just the star rating but the actual written ones — helped me a lot. You can spot patterns pretty fast.
